Rinse and Repeat
We are closed today (9/27). The forecast is to possibly receive additional rainfall of an inch tomorrow. If that happens i expect we will be closed until next week. The golf course is completely saturated and it will take a week of sunny, windy days for the property to dry out. Soil temperatures are starting to drop and wet soils take longer to dry out.
I feel this season will be the toughest season since 2011 when the property experienced the wrath of Hurricane Irene. Irene was a 100 year flood event and we were closed for three straight weeks. This weather that we have all endured since mid July is very frustrating for the staff as it is for our golfing members. Just as the property starts to dry out we receive heavy rainfall and we are back to square one.
Since we are unable to work on the course we are focusing our efforts on my "October Punch List". The punch list is all our property responsibilities to prepare for winter. We have removed the upper court tennis wind screens and removed the coolers on both courts. The lower court will remain as is for another two weeks then we will remove the wind screens, benches, and other tennis accessories.
We are removing all the summer perennials around the club house beds and trimming the boxwoods and holly's. We removed the dead ash in the parking lot and will continue to tidy up around the clubhouse the next few weeks.
Our agronomic goals for October is to finish aerating tees which is a labor intensive project. I plan to solid tine the greens and apply a generous amount of sand if time and weather allows us to do so. I also hope to apply a granular fertilizer to tees and green surrounds. Typically fall fertilization is done in early September but we are weeks behind schedule.
Recently in a conversation with the Club President he foretasted an Indian Summer. I hope to blog about that soon.
