Prevent Defense
I play soccer and is one of my passions in life outside of work. I played in high school, college and at one time the highest level of amateur play in Connecticut. I excelled at the central defender position and was very capable of reading and stopping an offensive play.
This natural ability to "read" the game serves me well on a day to day basis on the golf course. Mother nature is running high and dry right now and the LCC maintenance team is trying to prevent the inevitable. Greens, tees, and fairways are under considerable physiological stress due to high temperatures and lack of natural rainfall. The grass is dormant in the rough and growth on the greens, tees, and fairways is minimal.
I have temporary raised the cutting height on the greens to .140 of an inch. This slight increase will help the plant produce more carbohydrates and thus will reduce the amount of physiological stress. This slight increase will effect ball roll. Most of the greens are handling the droughty conditions but I must manage the greens for the weakest link. I will lower them back down as soon as we start receiving some much needed rainfall. I will continue to roll the greens thrice a week which will keep the playing surfaces smooth.
The 7th green is really struggling to stay hydrated. The off color areas are droughty areas that we are hand watering daily.
Compare this to the 3rd green which is almost perfect. There are a number of factors as to why this is but that is blog post for another day.
We have finally seeded the area between 9 green and 7 tees with a combination of native wildflowers and little bluestem grass. I expect to see some germination soon and we will continue to irrigate to promote the growth and development. Not the greatest time of the year to start seeding but I am determined to give this area a much better look. A bluebird has nested and produced 4 eggs.
Please continue to use the divot mix provided for the tees and carts. Don't worry about putting your "pelts" back in the fairways or tees. They will not "take" in this type of weather. Keeping carts away from greens and tees will reduce unnecessary wear and tear on the plants. Thanks for your cooperation!
Ill see you out in our crispy fairways!
