100 day stretch

The LCC maintenance team has just entered the 100 day stretch.  This refers to the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day which is the busiest time of the season.  Our goal is to provide the best conditions possible on a daily basis working within our budget, labor and whatever mother nature can offer.

Oh fickle Mother Nature decided to come two weeks late with her yearly flush of turfgrass growth. All turfgrass surfaces exploded with excessive growth right before and after Memorial Day weekend.  The rough was extremely penal during this flush of growth.  This spring flush of growth has subsided thankfully and we are now able to maintain the rough at appropriate levels.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The greens were very good last week if you had a chance to play.  The sunny and windy days dried the greens out and they were rolling pretty quick.  We are mowing greens daily and rolling greens thrice a week and so be mindful with downhill putts.

The first green has made a great recovery but it still hasn't completely filled in.

I will seed the weak areas again this week and make another application of fertilizer to encourage these thin spots to fill in.  I expect to walk mow it for another week or more with the height of cut a little higher than the rest of the greens.  A slightly higher height of cut will encourage the bentgrass to creep and fill in faster.  The first green has and will play slightly slower than the rest of the greens until I lower the height of cut.

We have completed the chemical mixing and loading pad!

We constructed this with our staff and I am very proud of their hard work! It is self contained so in the advent of a spill it will not runoff and adversely effect the environment.  Its close proximity to the pesticide shed will also make it easier to mix and load the sprayer.  Now that this project is completed I am able to submit the Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Quality Management, and Wildlife and Habitat Management sections of Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.  We are now getting very close to certification.  The last section to be completed is the Outreach and Education.  Any members wishing to get involved with ACSP for golf please contact me.  I need your help!

We had a successful bluebird fledge in the bird box behind the 7th green.  The remaining boxes have
a mix of tree swallows and bluebirds.  They will be approaching "jump day" any day now.  The native area on 2 hill is really shining now and I will seed another native area behind the 9th green this coming week.

Please observe the new etiquette signs on the golf carts.  Repair your pitchmark and one other.  Replace your divots or use the divot mix provided on the tee boxes.  Park carts away from greens and tees.  When practicing on the first fairway please pick up your balls.  Any questions about proper golf course etiquette please feel free to ask me or AJ.  Thank You!

The upcoming week looks perfect for golf with daytime temperatures in the 80s with no rain in the forecast.  See you out in the fairways!
