Home Stretch
The streak finally came to a halt yesterday as the temperature hit 93 degrees. The last time we hit the 90 degree mark was on July 20th. The last 7 weeks have been ideal weather for growing cool season grasses which is evident by the current course conditions. The golf course is playing well and I am very pleased how well our fairways recovered from the summer stress.
All our major golf tournaments are over for the year and this is the time that I schedule some of our normal routine cultural practices. On Monday the greens were vertical mowed in two different directions. This was followed by a light topdressing and some fertilizer. This procedure keeps the greens smooth, firm and fast.
We aerated the putting green and the 1st green with our tractor mounted procore fairway aerator. This is the first time we have performed this on the greens with this equipment. It worked out great and we were able to pull deep cores to create a better root system.
The 8th fairway was aerated on Monday. We will continue this process next week as time and weather allows us. Please stay off fairways that have fresh cores. It is easier to pulverize clean plugs than ones that have been smeared and crushed into the turf by cart traffic.
The tee divot boxes are gone until next season. The maintenance crew will topdress tees as needed for the remaining season.
Picture below is our resident hawk. He will perch in the spruce near the 3rd green and watch you sink your putts. The season is winding down but there is plently of golfing to be had. Hope to see you in the fairways!
