Rough around the Edges

On the morning the course opened  I was able to witness a aerial battle between a Bald Eagle and Osprey.  It was quite an impressive way to start the season!  The bluebirds have started their nests and it wont be long now before the trees leaf out.

We are almost finished with our fall and winter clean up.  Fairways, tees, and approaches are being mowed.  The greens are being maintained at a higher cut right now and I will slowly lower the cut down over the coming weeks.  Maintaining a higher cut in the early spring helps develop deep roots which will pay dividends during stressful environmental conditions during the summer.

The greens are a little off color due to a plant growth regulator applied two weeks ago.  This regulator turns the greens off color when we experience cold nites which is to be expected this time of year.  Also, I have not fertilized the greens yet as soil temperatures are still cold and the plants wont be able to readily absorb the nutrients.  I expect to be fertilizing greens, tees, and fairways in early May.

Over the next three weeks we will focus our labor on some much needed projects:
  • Shrub plantings between 6 green and 5 white tee
  • Mulching clubhouse beds
  • Construction of a green topdressing bin
  • Drainage repair on 9 pot bunker
  • Green expansion on 5,6,1,3 greens
  • Service bridge repair
  • Sod repair on damaged tees
As you can see we have a lot to accomplish before we aerate the greens on May 8th! So course conditions might be a "little rough around the edges" the next few weeks as we focus more on projects and less on maintenance.

Lastly, we will have the remaining benches and other accessories out as soon as we finish painting them.  Soil temperatures are still too cold for seed germination so divot mix will be available when the time is right.

Ill see you out in the fairways!
