51 days and counting

This brutal winter is finally coming to a close and normal temperatures are finally on the horizon.  The last few days of sun and 40s really felt wonderful! A nice slow melt is what I am hoping for otherwise I am afraid we will have considerable flooding to start the season. Chris and I have started the arduous task of removing 2+feet of snow off the greens to expose the ice.

The greens have been under snow and ice since January 18th.  After 60 days of continuous ice coverage there is a greater probability of winterkill to the greens.  We started the process two weeks ago on the 4th and practice green.  This week we have cleared off the 5th and 2nd green.  Tomorrow we will clear off the 3rd green and check the 1st and 9th greens for ice.

This picture shows ice on the 2nd green taken on mid January and then again today.  This green was covered in two inches of thick ice.  The 5th green is clear of ice and looks good.  Picture below is the 4th green that is almost free of ice.  We applied sunflower seeds to speed up the ice melting process.
So far so good!  Ill take some more pictures over the next few days and update the blog.  Think Spring!
