Brown isnt bad

The fairways are a little brown.  Excessive soil moisture, high night time temperatures and high humidity led to epic proportions of brown patch in the fairways.  The fairways were immediately treated but the affected areas slowly died off. The picture below is of active brown patch on the 5th approach on July 3rd.

I suspect we may have some hyperode weevil and pythium blight damage in the fairways. Also, some areas of turf were under water for over two weeks and did not survive.

As compared to our green and tee program our fairway spray program is very basic and we only spray a few times a summer.  Typically it protects the turf under normal summer conditions.  This season the disease pressure has been extraordinarily high and controlling all these diseases has been very difficult.

The good news is that you will get a little more ball roll off your tee shots.  Also, I'm fairly pleased with the greens and tees.  They have held up well during our recent heat waves.  At this time some of our old poorly constructed tees are starting to show signs of stress.  The poa annua on the 1st and 2nd greens are under extreme duress and have turned off color.

We just received 1.4 inches of rain yesterday and with some cooler temperatures it should promote some slow recovery on all these stressed areas.  I anticipate seeding the fairways with a bentgrass/fescue mixture in early August.

I'm glad to see so many members playing golf these past few weeks.  Good luck to all the participants in the men's member guest this weekend!
