Spring Surge

The golf course is in great condition as we enter what I call our "spring surge".  This is my term for optimum growing conditions for cool season grasses. The grass is growing at a very rapid pace and rest assured we are trying our best to stay on top of this flush of growth.

The 5th hole waste area is complete.  It is permissible to ground your club as well as move loose impediments.  We sodded the remaining portion of the 5th tee yesterday and have seeded in the remaining bare areas.

We vertical mowed the 8th fairway today in two directions.  This the first time we have done this procedure and we pulled up a lot of material.  I feel this is something we will have to do every year until we reach an acceptable level of thatch.  Presently the thatch level is 2-3 inches thick.  I plan on seeding the bare areas and I appreciate every ones cooperation in keeping carts off this section of fairway.

Most of the greens have healed over from aerification with the exception of a few greens.  Another application of a quick release granular fertilizer on those stragglers and they should fill in quickly.  The greens height of cut will be lowered this week which should translate to better ball roll on the greens.

We have planted some dawn redwoods on the 8th hole which were donated by a very generous member.  We also have two bald cypress to plant on the 2nd hole.

Hope to see you in the fairways!
