Late winter update
The long New England winter is slowly transitioning to longer and warmer days. It is still hard to imagine that this time last year the course was already open!
The rain received melted away much of the ice and snow on the course. However, the runoff was too quick for the already swollen river and the course experienced a minor flooding event. Fortunately it did not wash up any sand or silt on the fairways.
It will be sometime before the course dries out from the flood. I'm anxious to start the winter cleanup process and get the course open for play. Looking forward to a new year and a new set of challenges!
I walked the course yesterday and I am relieved to report that the thick layer of ice has vanished from most of the putting surfaces. The color of the greens looks normal for this time of the year and I did not observe any winter injury. Poa annua is a fragile plant and is very susceptible to ice damage as everyone witnessed two years ago. Pictured below are the 5th and 7th greens.
